Editors and collaborators

The Project is sustained by a small group of editors and a wider circle of occasional collaborators. Affiliations are listed for reference only; the Project itself is independent of all of them.

Editorial board

• Dr Elias V. Berghuis Founding editor

  Studied at Utrecht and the École pratique des hautes études (Paris). Editorial responsibility for the Greek patristic corpus, the Athanasian and Cappadocian volumes, and the Palamite series.

• Dr Ioana Bălescu Senior editor — Slavonic and Maximus the Confessor

  Trained in Bucharest and Thessaloniki. Editorial responsibility for the Slavonic transmission programme and for the Maximus the Confessor and Symeon the New Theologian editions.

• Dr Theodora Stamatiou Senior editor — liturgical and patristic Greek

  Studied in Athens and Tübingen. Editorial responsibility for liturgical materials, the Cyril of Alexandria volumes, and the Basil of Caesarea editions. Maintains the Project's bibliography of Greek manuscripts consulted.

• Hieromonk Photios (van der Linden) Editor — Syriac

  Studied at Leiden and at the Mardin Artuklu University. Editorial responsibility for the entire Syriac programme: Ephrem, Jacob of Serugh, Isaac of Nineveh, and the various ascetic writers. The only Syriacist of the editorial board.

• Dr Andreas Janssen Editor — Chrysostomian corpus

  Studied at Leuven. Editorial responsibility for the John Chrysostom editions and for the Life of Antony. Joined the editorial board in 2021.

• Dr Magdalena Voskuijl Editor — ascetic and hagiographic Greek

  Studied at Groningen and Vienna. Editorial responsibility for the John Climacus, Gregory of Nyssa, and Apophthegmata editions. Joined the editorial board in 2022.

Occasional collaborators and consulting reviewers

The editorial board is supplemented by a small group of consulting reviewers — scholars who read proofs, advise on particular textual questions, and occasionally contribute to apparatus. We are grateful for their work, which is often discreet and uncredited in the published editions, and which we acknowledge here.

• Prof. Dr Jan Eerlandse Reading editor — patristic Greek

  University of Amsterdam, retired. Reads proofs of all Greek volumes and has saved the editors from a great many infelicities.

• Dr Sebastiano Falbo Reading editor — Maximus and the Confessor's corpus

  Università di Bologna. Consulting reviewer for the Maximus volumes, with particular expertise in the manuscript tradition of the Ambigua.

• Dr Sebastian Olariu Reading editor — Romanian Hesychast tradition

  Universitatea din București. Consults on the Slavonic and Romanian transmission of the Philokalia.

• Dr Eleni Pavlidou Reading editor — Byzantine hymnography

  University of Patras. Consulting reviewer for liturgical volumes, particularly the Akathist and the Triodion sermons.

• Fr Iacov Manea Reading editor — Romanian Hesychast tradition

  Sihăstria Monastery. Consults on questions of monastic terminology and on the Slavonic-Romanian translation tradition.

• Dr Beata Sokolowska Reading editor — Slavonic codicology

  Uniwersytet Jagielloński. Consulting reviewer for Slavonic manuscript questions and for the codicology of the Hilandar collections.

How collaborators are added

We do not maintain an open application process. Collaboration with the Project begins typically through scholarly correspondence: a colleague writes to one of the editors about a textual question, a manuscript reading, or a problem of attribution; the conversation continues; at some point it becomes appropriate to ask whether the colleague would be willing to read proofs of a forthcoming volume. This has produced an editorial circle that is small, geographically scattered, and largely sustained by personal scholarly relationships.

Scholars working on texts within our scope are warmly encouraged to write to us. We cannot promise immediate response — our editorial correspondence is sometimes slow — but every serious enquiry is read and considered.
